We hope that you never have a loss. However
disasters do happen and it is important to be prepared. Here are
some suggestions regarding claims:
- Review your apartment renters insurance
coverage before something happens. If you lost all your personal
property by fire or hurricane the loss could add up to more than
you think. Consider what it would cost to replace all your
clothing, furniture, TV, computer, stereo, CD's, dishes, and
miscellaneous items. Think about getting a little more coverage
than you need today to be sure you have enough and to allow for
new property being accumulated.
- Ask you agent about upgrades available.
The "replacement cost" upgrade is especially important. If your
jewelry and computer equipment is worth more than a couple
hundred dollars it is advisable to upgrade your coverage on
these items.
- Read your policy for coverage details.
Our renter's package includes a variety of coverage's. There may
be features that you are not aware of. As an example, most
renters' policies have some coverage for personal property away
from home.
- In the event of a claim it is best to
have receipts for expensive items. You can also document your
property by writing an inventory and/or taking pictures or
making a video. If possible store an additional copy of your
records at a different location such as a safe deposit box or at
a relative's home.
- If you have a loss you should contact the
claims department as soon as possible at 800-435-7764.
- Document your loss the best you can. If
there is a theft it is advisable to make a police report. For
damage it is helpful to take pictures or make a video of the
damage.
- Where possible avoid permanent repairs to
damage until inspected by your adjuster. If something like a
smashed door must be repaired before the adjuster arrives you
can consult with the claims department for documentation
suggestions.
